Architectural studio DesignARC has renovated this gorgeous 1960s midcentury ranch house situated in Montecito, on the Central Coast of California. The project was inspired by another of the architect’s homes that caught the owners’ eye. They were looking for a fresh take on their outdated, well-worn abode. Originally from Toronto, Canada, the couple feels at ease in urban, loft-like living spaces. Here, they desired to create a pared-down dwelling that could become their home.

The objective of this remodel project was to completely reconfigure the floor plan beneath the existing roof. Spaces were organized to create a harmonious flow throughout the interior spaces. The main priority was to connect all spaces to the outdoors. On either side of the living room, pocket sliding glass doors create an open-air breezeway out of what was once a dark and secluded room. Continuous ridge skylights flood the center of the house with natural light, further blurring the lines between indoors and out.

A New Floor Plan Built Around Indoor-Outdoor Living

The minimalist palette consists of essentially three materials: smooth-trowelled plaster, cementitious panel, and fumed-oak floors. With a color scheme of “one white” paint, the interior provides a neutral backdrop to the vibrant relationship the family enjoys with the outdoors and the mild Santa Barbara climate.
