Robert Dean Architects has designed this gorgeous traditional-style beach house retreat on Nantucket, an island situated off the coast of Massachusetts. This 6,500 square-foot, six-bedroom dwelling is nestled on its site as a simple and coherent object in the landscape with beautiful wrap-around porches. The exterior facade reveals classical underpinnings while sustaining a casual presence.
The use of classical detailing is deliberately calibrated, with simplified forms at large scale and increased complexity where it is effective to celebrate entry or to build a hierarchy of form at the interior. Inside, you will find a large bunk bedroom and a lofty, open layout floor plan that is complete with a cozy reading nook and a lovely terrace for alfresco dining. There are three other terraces, one located at the front of the home, the living room, and the owner’s bedroom suite, very idyllic for this year-round getaway.

This dwelling boasts sensational views overlooking Nantucket Sound, therefore, careful consideration and study were needed to ensure the preservation of sightlines out to the water. During the design process, noting important existing vegetation and topography, sighting proposed buildings, and laying out a beautiful entry drive experience into this island home was of great importance.
What We Love: This shingle-style Nantucket beach house was beautifully designed to maximize views of the surrounding beauty, including the Nantucket Harbor. Several large terraces provide a wonderful way to soak in the beauty and enjoy an indoor-outdoor lifestyle that can be shared with family and friends. We love the simplicity of the material palette and the gorgeous pool house with its covered outdoor living area that is perfect for entertaining family and friends.

The interior features sleek, white-paneled walls reminiscent of a boat’s cabin, while the shingled exterior boasts a minimalist and refined aesthetic.
The architect devised an upside-down floor plan to take advantage of the views of the Nantucket Harbor. The floor plan features bedrooms on the main level, and the communal spaces — living, dining, and kitchen areas — are on the second level.

Set within a wetland resource area, this 6-acre property included the restoration of a depleted salt marsh, as well as the extensive removal of invasive tree and shrub species.
LeBlanc Jones Landscape Architects was inspired by the rugged beauty of Nantucket, employing a limited native plant palette, that included Bayberry, Scrub Oak, Arrowwood Viburnum, and Little Bluestem, which was carried out by way of meticulously thought-out massing throughout the site. These efforts resulted in a seamless connection and balance between introduced elements and their natural surroundings.
