A 100 year old Dutch Colonial home in Winchester gets a charming update

dutch-colonial-home-exterior

Originally built in 1915, this Dutch Colonial home was completely overhauled by Cummings Architecture + Interiors, located in Winchester, a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. The owners wanted to celebrate the charm of their century-old home but were also looking for a refresh for the modern lifestyle needs of a busy family of four. Encompassing 3,600 square feet of living space, this project aimed to bring fresh, modern ideas to the interior spaces while also providing the family with comfort and easy living.

Instead of expanding the home’s footprint, the owners chose to enhance the existing space by creating a more open and airy feel. This included a complete makeover of the main level, creating a more spacious kitchen with a pantry, a dedicated mudroom with a closet, and an improved connection with the backyard. Exterior details underwent a facelift, including the front porch, a new back porch, and roof details.

Throughout this dwelling, interior finishes and fixtures were replaced to embody a clean, bright, and cool aesthetic, a mix of traditional and modern that works well with the graceful exterior.

What We Love: This Dutch Colonial home was beautifully renovated to combine historical charm with modern living. The project team did a wonderful job of accommodating the homeowner’s hopes and dreams, giving them a new layout that is organized and functional while providing a connection to the outdoor living spaces. This home now provides a sanctuary for this family, showcasing exceptional finishes and comfortable living spaces. We are loving every detail, especially the kitchen with its crisp, clean finishes and black accents.

To create enough space for the walk-in closet and bathroom, the space had to be bumped out over the back porch. The builder did a fantastic job of making it appear, from the exterior, that it had always been there. The vanity was supplied by Longleaf Lumber and is composed of reclaimed hemlock and spruce.
