JLF Architects designed this stunning handcrafted mountain house for a couple of empty nesters, situated on 50 acres just outside of Bozeman, Montana. Sitting lightly on the land, the home’s expansive windows are oriented to capture surrounding views of the Bridger Mountain range and valley vistas.

The home’s material palette includes beautiful stonework, reclaimed wood floors from Montana Reclaimed Lumber, hand-hewn timber elements, detailed finish carpentry, and exacting tile work. The design of this residence is characterized by a collection of volumes that extend along the hillside, evoking the sense of regional agrarian structures that have evolved over time.

Above: One of the unusual design choices in this home was the omission of a formal entryway. Instead, guests access the dwelling through the covered area linking the house to the garage. This approach fosters a casual atmosphere that respects the rural surroundings and aligns with the homeowners’ vision for the way they want to experience the house.

For the home’s living spaces; on one end, the project team sourced reclaimed white barnboard, as the homeowner loved old barns and wanted that passion to be reflected in her home. On the opposite end of the home, the cozy master bedroom is essentially built within a timber-stacked cabin, which affords perfect views of Montana’s stunning sunset light on the mountains.

What We Love: The large windows throughout this handcrafted mountain house help to perfectly frame the idyllic landscape. Materials such as hand-hewn beams, natural stone, and rustic flooring help to bring inviting warmth into this home. These materials also help to complement the rugged surroundings. Overall, the project team did a fabulous job of creating a lived-in feeling in this home thanks to all of the layers of texture and organic finishes.
