Inside a rustic modern ranch house with glorious views over Big Sky Country

Lake|Flato Architects has designed this stunning rustic modern ranch house located near Three Forks, a city in Gallatin County, Montana. This ranch is nestled at the transition zone between the high rolling prairie and the lush Gallatin River valley.

The design of this dwelling took its inspiration from the tradition of “sod buster” houses that were embedded into the hillsides and covered with earth and grasses to offer shelter from the brutal winter winds while opening to the warming southern sun. On the porch, custom lounge chairs of reclaimed barn wood provide comfortable seating for watching sunsets.

The main living pavilion takes its design cues from the simple gable barn shapes. Rolling screens, rolling glass doors, and rolling panels enable this pavilion to respond to the ever-changing climatic conditions. Layered wood and steel roofs, exposed concrete, weathered wood siding, and rusted metal provide a rugged yet enduring palette of materials.

What We Love: This ranch house provides a family of four with a wonderful escape, built right next to a trickling creek to enjoy the soothing sounds of water. Open and airy living spaces provide a fantastic indoor-outdoor connection. A dynamic mix of new and recycled materials including concrete, steel, and glass creates an overall attractive aesthetic for this home’s inhabitants to enjoy for years to come.

Very nice. Reminds me of a smaller version of the Surround Calcaire home in Boulder. Same long-form home, high ceilings with iron, mid-room screen, concrete in place of limestone, etc..
