This refined craftsman-style cottage was designed for a family of five by NSPJ Architects, located in Prairie Village, a city in Johnson County, Kansas. An existing structure was on the property, however, to meet the lifestyle needs of this family, they required a larger living footprint.
They decided to tear down the existing structure and build a new custom design to create their own roots — expanding from about 2,500 square feet to 5,000 square feet. This home offers a comfortable and efficient design that works effortlessly for this active household.

The design balances a natural, rustic feel with modern elements. Timber accents on the roof brackets and porch entry, as well as the shingle siding and stone accents, show off the rustic nature of the home.
The home was built are the needs of the couple’s growing kids. There are three-bedroom suites located on the upper level. The owner’s suite is located on the main level, which was ideal for the owners since they have no intention of moving again. When the eventually kids move out, they can essentially shut off the upper area of the house and live in a ranch-style home once again, with everything they need on the main level.
Taking almost 18 months to complete this custom build, the home offers four bedrooms, six bathrooms, a home office, and a loft. There is also a finished basement with a guest bedroom and bathroom.
What We Love: This craftsman-style home offers a cozy and inviting living environment for a busy family of five. Rich wood flooring brings warmth into this home, along with beautiful furnishings and accessories. The Nanowall in the living room helps to blur the boundaries between indoors and out while extending the living space to a screened-in porch that can be enjoyed by family and friends throughout the seasons.

The NanaWall, an air-tight pocket door at the back of the home, gives the home the ability to expand its interior space to the exterior, marrying traditional design with a modern glass element. The new flow of the home provides options for seamless entertaining and busy family life.
The spacious kitchen has a modern-rustic feel. The floors are reclaimed black walnut wood (which is seen throughout the home). The wood was sourced from an old barn and adds an Old World feel. It’s extremely durable and the uneven texture provides a lot of character. The island countertop is the same material as the floors, yet sanded and made smooth for food prep and serving needs.
A cozy sitting room next to the main bedroom features a repurposed mantel taken from their previous home. Shiplap walls accentuate the vaulted ceiling, adding a country vibe to the space and flows well with the more modern look of the suite that it connects with.
This beautiful bathroom has a spa-like feel, a family favorite since moving in (the kids really loved using the large walk-in shower). The bedroom suite also has access to a door that leads outside to the backyard.
