A family summerย retreat built in the late 1970s has been beautifully renovated by Lake | Flato Architects, located on Long Island, New York. The home’s originalย roots began as a vacation homeย that had been in the family for many years. The homeowners wished to modernize the existingย three bedroom footprint of justย 1,600 square feet. The preserve the original structure, the existing part of the home was converted into bedrooms and a game room for the children.
The architects created a north wing addition to the existing structure, adding a new main living and kitchen area. While an east wing was added, encompassing the master bedroom suite. The new site layout of the old and new structures forms a courtyard with a swimming pool. The children’s bedrooms feature siding glass panels, which creates an easy flowย to the outdoor courtyard. “Theย glass-encased main living room also opens to the courtyard while bringing the exteriorโs metal siding and local bluestone inside of the home,” states the architects.
The interiors scheme is characterized byย finishes in mainly blues, grays and whitesโa reflection of the surrounding beachy locale. After an extensive restructuring of the existing dwelling and a 2,800 square foot brand new addition, the new homeย supports the family’s lifestyle needs. The retreat fulfills their passion of outdoor recreation, beach living and aย yearning for aย sentimental and timeless place for their children to grow into adulthood.
What We Love: This modern summer retreat is ultra-inviting, from the pivoting glass door entryway to the outdoor courtyard. We are loving the new updates to make this family home more spacious and give the adults and children their individual privacy. Overall the architects have done a fantastic job of merging old with new into an updated design that will giving this family years of lasting memories… Readers, what are your thoughts on the overall design of this family home?ย
