Jessica Helgerson Interior Design was responsible for the remarkable transformation of this once dilapidated split-level mid-century ranch home located in Portland, Oregon. On the main level, enclosed living spaces are now open and airy with a spacious great room and kitchen filled with natural light. The master bathroom was moved to the back of the home, now taking advantage of views to a lush garden.

A subtle color palette creates a warm and welcoming environment, with crisp white walls complimented by a dark stained ebony flooring and fabrics in neutrals with splashes of green. Most of the furnishings seen throughout the home are vintage pieces that have been refinished and then reupholstered to give them a whole new life! The rocking chaise, which can be seen to the right of the picture above, is one such find.

One exception is the stunning coffee table in the center of the living room, which was designed by Jessica’s husband who is an architect. He constructed this piece from a slab of Eastern hard rock maple, picked up from a salvage yard. The brick fireplace was preserved and given a fresh coat of white paint to update it. A built-in window seat adds a cozy little nook to the room and looks out over the garden.

The white walls gives a beautiful, airy backdrop to the space, while a feature wall at the top of the stairs painted in black provides a stark contrast and an air of sophistication. The mirrored armoire and light fixtures on the wall creates a nice aesthetic to the space. The green foliage provides some freshness and an organic element throughout the interiors of the home. Overall, this family home renovation is truly inspiring, with a nice eclectic mix that looks effortless and beautiful!

What We Love: How the galley kitchen is no longer closed off, allowing for great circulation and ease of use. The interiors now feel bright and spacious and the design has a real freshness to it that feels warm and welcoming, just as a family home should feel. The cabinets in the master bathroom are comprised of kirei board, which is a strong, light-weight material that is environmentally friendly. According to the product website, “the material is a composite panel derived from reclaimed sorghum straw, poplar wood bonding layers and a water-resistant no-added formaldehyde adhesive.”

The home has been decorated with a lot of antiques, adding personalization to the space. According to the designer, this includes “a pair of Portuguese eel traps hanging over the fireplace mantel, Chinese garden stools, a rustic mirrored cabinet, and French blown-glass demijohn bottles.”
