David Heide Design Studio has reimagined a postwar “log cabin” in Long Lake, a freshwater lake located in Washburn County, Wisconsin. In the 1990s, a large addition in the form of an entire house was added onto a modest 1950s cabin, preserving much of the original structure.
The architect reimagined the addition with minor adjustments to the footprint, resulting in a whimsical contemporary space boasting a natural palette and seamless integration with the outdoors. Be sure to continue below to see the BEFORE pictures of this remodel project!

This alteration allowed for larger windows, bringing in more natural light, and the addition of dormers above the foyer entry and dining room enhanced the loft’s brightness. An extension towards the lake expanded the dining area and entertainment space on the lower level, while the screened porch was enlarged to include built-in seating.
A new front porch provides a welcoming entry for guests, while a well-appointed Northwoods mudroom offers ample storage. Throughout the interior, finishes inspired by nature imbue each room with texture, harmonizing the architecture with the surrounding landscape.
What We Love: The architects breathed new life into a bland and suburban 1990s addition, turning it into a cozy lakeside retreat. By making subtle changes to the footprint, they reimagined the house while playing with the cabin vocabulary to craft a whimsical, modern space boasting sweeping lake views, a warm palette, and ample uncluttered storage, catering to the needs of the family and their fortunate guests who frequent the home.
