Situated in the coastal suburb of Avoca Beach, New South Wales, this magnificent Aussie beach house is a creation of the studio, Architecture Saville Isaacs. Tasked with accommodating a small family while also being adaptable to various guest configurations, privacy levels, scales, and interactions, the architects masterfully brought to life an experience that embraces the essence of seaside living.

Drawing inspiration from the coastal lifestyle, the design concept revolves around tangible spaces that seamlessly merge with the surrounding environment. Pavilions, courtyards, and outdoor rooms have been meticulously crafted to manifest the different facets of beachside living, offering a range of indoor and outdoor experiences.

Functionality and aesthetics were at the heart of the project brief, with an emphasis on using raw, natural, and durable materials. The primary objective was to maximize the connection to the beach, both visually and physically. To achieve this, a series of interconnected spaces were ingeniously arranged to maintain a continuous focus on the breathtaking shoreline.

The public areas of the house were designed as a succession of indoor/outdoor pavilions, where courtyards blur the boundaries between the interior and exterior, creating inviting outdoor rooms.

Along a central circulation spine, a sequence of pavilions and courtyards stretch from the street to the beach, each serving a unique purpose: an entry/car court, a grassed west courtyard with an existing tree, a games pavilion, a sheltered sand+fire courtyard, a living pavilion, an operable verandah, and finally, the beach itself. These space can be enclosed during the winter months and completey open in the summer.

In its pursuit of timelessness and simplicity, the design highlights the tactile qualities of the chosen materials, such as concrete, raw recycled grey ironbark, steel, and natural stone. These materials, carefully selected for their robustness, low maintenance, and recyclability, create a consistent palette throughout the residence.

The clever use of natural and artificial light further enhances the textural qualities of the materials, shaping the spaces with an ethereal glow. 

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

The architects’ emphasis on passive climatic design strategies, including strategic orientation, winter solar penetration, screening and shading, thermal mass, and cross ventilation, ensures a stable indoor climate with minimal reliance on heating and cooling systems. The home benefits from the refreshing sea breezes in the east while being protected from harsh afternoon winds. Additionally, rainwater harvesting is employed for eco-friendly water reuse. The use of low VOC and non-toxic materials, along with hydronic floor heating and effective ventilation, contributes to a healthy indoor environment.
