A charred timber screen clads this exhilarating coastal home in Australia

This timeless coastal home was designed by Project 12 Architecture nestled amongst the dunes and Moonah trees of Sorrento Back Beach, on the Mornington Peninsula, in Victoria, Australia. Clarebrough Constructions is the owner/builder of this project for his family of four who had been residing on the property for a couple of years in an old fibro beach shack before building their dream home.

Their brief was for a family home that respected the coastal site and provided a home that was luxurious, yet also relaxed. The house is cut into the site and terraces down gently to respond to the gentle fall of the block. The front of the house is clad with charred timber ship-lap boards and battens, screening views from the road and which can be closed when the family is away.

Stepping behind the screen the material palette softens, consisting of white recycled brick and silver top ash cladding. The exterior materials are robust, responding to the coastal environment and providing the required bush fire rating. The texture of the recycled bricks is continued into the interior spaces and complemented by the warmth of the spotted gum to joinery elements.

“โ€˜We wanted the house to have two contrasting and distinct faces. On the street elevation, we used charred timber โ€“ this results in a layered but private appearance. The elevations that face the pool area are all defined by sculptural piers of whitewashed recycled brick and silvered timber which result in a much more social and inviting architectural experience,” states the architects.

For the design of their 3,692 square foot home, the owners desired a relaxed, barefoot feel, yet also a home that was stylish and luxurious.

What We Love: This fascinating coastal home in Australia provides its inhabitants with the house of their dreams. Large picture windows frame serene views of the lush vegetation on the property. We are loving the concept of the exterior facade with its charred timber screen for privacy from the street. Relaxed yet sophisticated living spaces are connected to a backyard oasis for entertaining family and friends.

The home was created in an L-shaped plan and is orientated towards the northwest of the site, maximizing natural light and providing protection from the prevailing weather. A double garage and childrenโ€™s bedrooms are located to the southeast of the block, with living spaces arranged towards the north and facing out to the terrace and pool.

The primary suite is positioned at the end of the plan, separated from the main living spaces and nestled in the shade of an established Moonah tree.

Oh no; looks like a prison and the interior is spartan to day the least.
