A 100-year-old house in New Jersey gets a timeless and modern renovation

Michael Robert Construction together with Ellie Mroz Design has completed this full house renovation and addition project that is located in Westfield, New Jersey. This nearly 100-year-old house had beautiful curb appeal right from the start. Its elegant exterior is warm and inviting, yet just about everything else was in need of a major overhaul.

The project team’s approach to rehabbing the front exterior was echoed throughout the home. They preserved the natural stone facade along with the symmetrical design on the exterior. They also increased the size of all the windows throughout in order to enhance natural light and used white and black for the accents.

The original staircase was moved to construct a dramatic central staircase that is both functional and sculptural. This helped to create views of the double-volume breakfast nook window tower throughout the dwelling. The finished result is a unique home that is filled with optimal views of the outdoors.

This light-filled dwelling features multiple indoor/outdoor spaces, and unique finishes throughout its family spaces, lounge/bar, two offices, six bedrooms, seven bathrooms, and a finished basement.

The selections and finishes generate a sleek, urban aesthetic that is punctuated by the use of black metal throughout and curated lighting. Meanwhile, symmetry, classic materials such as brick and natural woods, along with architectural elements (arches) provide a classic foundation.

What We Love: The result of this house renovation project is completely refreshed spaces that feel better than new. With beautiful, stately bones and updated amenities, and a new interior layout that meets the lifestyle needs of a modern family. There are so many fabulous design features throughout the home, including the sitting area and full bar for entertaining in the expansive great room. We are loving the bar design with its floating glass window panel that provides visual separation while allowing for bar seating.

For the exterior addition, the team selected simple cream plaster, merging streamlined modern with classic century-old design. Thatโ€™s what this 5,000-square-foot residence is all about โ€” marrying timeless and modern.
