This stunning mountain sanctuary was designed as a family getaway home by Upwall Design Architects in collaboration with AMB Design, located in Deery Valley, Utah. The Floridian homeowners vacation seasonally across the globe but hold a deep affinity for Deer Valley and Utah winters and decided to establish their dream mountain-modern-manse in the area.
The home had to capture views, offer direct access to skiing and hiking, entertain well, provide ample party space, and free-flowing function for up to forty family members. Everything needed for cooking, showering, billiards, reading, snacking, puzzling, working, and fitness, had to be within reach and provide intuitive ease of use.

The function could not take a backseat to form, so the modern architectural dynamics of the Michael Upwall-designed home had to harmonize with the interior design. Each shower niche, every vanity configuration, all laundry areas, and storage spaces had to present themselves for use subtly but quietly.
Never settling for the norm, the homeowner painstakingly poured over plans with the designer and trades to ensure each textile, finish, material, and furniture piece would offer comfort. Metals had to have continuity but not match. The result delivered the vision: a warm, all-seasons indoor-outdoor home to be truly calm and still in, even if at the same time the teenagers partied in another section of the home.
AMB Design met the moment by expertly space planning and scaling furniture and light fixtures to proportion, without overtaking the room or detracting from the views. The new and old, the found and the fresh combine to make modern Italy and old Pompeii meld well in the mountains!
The outcome is a very livable and generous floor plan inside an intriguing structure. AMB Design successfully utilized durable materials in plaster, steel, brass, engineered wood, and treated fabrics to ensure the house will help the good times roll for many years to come.
Each room offers a surprise to the senses and helps the residents delight in the use. Unique items include faucets that fold or deploy to the user, towel drops and storage near jacuzzi spaces or patio doors that are plaster-covered and touch latch and flush in the wall… an art gallery wall with metal-framed borders, custom-made and curated artwork in a variety of mediums but made for the room and coordinated to the fabrics or wallcovering or rugs of the same room, and a master suite complete with a marble plunge pool.
The home is at once rough but refined, but not polished. It feels new but has an old soul. We welcome this wonderful family and their friends to the new standard for all-seasons mountain living.
What We Love: This mountain sanctuary in Utah provides a comfortable and inviting atmosphere for extended family to gather and celebrate the beauty that surrounds them. Large windows capture the breathtaking surroundings while flooding the interiors with natural light. Artwork and accessories can be found throughout this home, gathered from the homeowner’s travels, helping to personalize the living spaces. Overall, the project team did a fabulous job of creating a warm yet sophisticated retreat that will last for generations.
