This cozy beach house was designed as a family retreat by Hutker Architects along with Holmes Hole Builders perched high on a bluff overlooking Edgartown Harbor, Massachusetts. Used for family gatherings during the summer months, this dwelling is reminiscent of a European hilltop village, with the main house connecting to outbuildings, a pool, and a private dock below through a series of rustic footpaths, gardens, and landscape features.
Details on the interior and exterior were designed to highlight the organic shapes and textures of natural materials, perhaps most notably in the home’s outdoor pool grotto and in its living room fireplace, which appears to have been pieced together from twigs, pebbles, and branches gathered for the surrounding woods.

The exterior exudes traditional New England vernacular, yet features expansive walls of glazing and the flow of a contemporary interior. The exterior consists of a series of gable roof forms positioned along the ridge of a coastal bank. The procession extends past a stone grotto, pool and spa, in-law suite, and morning terrace, before arriving at a semi-circular view deck.
The combined use of mahogany, western red cedar, and reclaimed barn board provides a weathered and timeless appearance on the exterior facade. Traditional use of materials and detailing anchors the home to its site while large expanses of glass and stone offers a more contemporary feel.
The extensive use of natural materials throughout this dwelling provides a calming oasis in a busy world.
Bringing exterior materials into the interior and opening the central floor plan to blur the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces, enables a small footprint to feel more spacious.
