Hammer Architects in collaboration with Pinney Designs has reimagined this midcentury deck house and detached cottages, located in Wellfleet, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. Set atop a cliff overlooking the Wellfleet Harbor, this home allows its inhabitants to take advantage of amazing views from every vantage point, including the Chequessett Neck Country Club from the rear of the home.

The scope of this project entailed a renovation and addition to the original home on the property, which will be used as a vacation getaway for a large and active family. After spending numerous vacations in Eastern Europe, the owners found themselves loving the mix of mid-century furnishings with Scandi-inspired interior architecture.

The original three-bedroom early Deckhouse design was too small and cramped for the family and was expanded to provide the owners with a new bedroom suite that includes an indoor/ outdoor shower along with three additional guest bedrooms clustered around a family room.

What We Love: This midcentury deck house was beautifully renovated and expanded to provide the owners and their extended family with a waterside retreat. The picturesque views surrounding this home help to inspire the renovation, everything from the material selection to the furnishings. Overall, we are loving the wonderful indoor-outdoor connection, fantastic views, and the incredible transformation of this home into a delightful family retreat.

The interior designer selected a simple white interior palette to enhance the natural mahogany exposed throughout the home. Finding color in the case pieces and accessories, she built a blue hue throughout the residence to create a relationship between the coast right outside of their front door and the more neutral tones they were inspired by in their travels.

Colors in the main living space mimic the color of Wellfleet Harbor and set the palette for the entire house.

The designer’s scale of furnishings was intentional, so as to not overwhelm the space. The rooms feel expansive as a result of her furniture selections with legs versus upholstery that extended to the floor.

A greatly enlarged kitchen and dining space connects to the living room and to a large outdoor deck, which in turn steps down to the landscaped garden and hot tub terrace

The owner’s bed was custom-designed to carry out the sense of space with the illusion of a floating bed, making it an idyllic space to fall fast asleep every night.

Outbuildings on this property include a guest house, an artist’s studio, and a freestanding screened-in pavilion.

The property features wooded areas that accommodate a hot tub, fire pit, and intimate seating areas, as well as direct access to the beach.
