This indoor/outdoor home provides a calming oasis in the Arizona desert

modern-desert-home-exterior

This spectacular indoor/outdoor home was designed by The Ranch Mine, located at the base of Camelback Mountain in Phoenix, Arizona. A cantilevered roof slants up towards Camelback Mountain to capture views while creating an uninterrupted connection between the front porch, great room, and a backyard-covered patio through a trio of pocketing glass doors.

The main living spaces in this 4,100 square foot dwelling were devised to provide an abundance of opportunities to view the mountain. A semi-public front porch offers idyllic views of the mountain, accessible via a custom pivoting gate with the family emblem used as the pattern on the gate.

What We Love: This indoor/outdoor home in the Arizona desert provides a family with ample spaces for living and entertaining. A cantilevered roof helps to shelter the outdoor spaces from the hot desert sun while providing an attractive design element to the exterior facade. Overall, we are loving the unique details found throughout this home, from the sliding glass doors that can change translucency to block the sun to the laser-cut metal with the family crest.

Tell Us: What do you find most appealing in the design of this dwelling and why in the Comments below!

The roof folds down at the back of the property to provide additional shade and privacy from neighbors, containing built-in seating and a fireplace.

The hemlock-clad ceiling of the great room tilts up to take in views of the rest of the mountain from the kitchen and dining room and two more pocketing glass doors open that space up to the rear covered patio that frames the same view to be enjoyed while living outdoors.

Above: Throughout this home, functional items were elevated by personal touches. A pattern from the homeowner’s family crest was used in a variety of ways. On the rear patio, it is used to create a screen to filter the sunlight for a partially sunlit built-in bench. On the front patio, it was used to accentuate both the front gate and the shadows it creates.

Above: The swimming pool is formed along the side of the house, receiving sun in the mornings to warm up but is shaded by the cantilevered roof in the afternoon from the intense desert sun. The shaded covered patio captures cooling breezes and includes built-in seating on the side with light filtering through a custom steel screen.
