Step inside an inviting atrium house with a boho vibe in North Carolina

This eco-friendly atrium house was designed by Assembly Architecture & Build, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina. This unique wedge shape structure with a shed roof is clad with white pine boards and features circular Pella windows found in the entryway and dining nook. The property is located on an active street with high visibility.

The architect sited the 3,000 square foot house towards the rear of the property, protecting it from the street while enhancing privacy. It would also allow for a generous porch to spill out on the neighboring field and make a strong connection to the landscape.

Throughout the process the architect thought carefully about how the house would be used and what spaces would require a new approach. By locating a sunken living room and kitchen at the rear of the house, views and privacy were maximized, while also giving the voluminous area a sense of intimacy by stepping it down from the entry.

In the end, a high level of involvement, collaborative approach, and desire for energy efficiency resulted in a house that is both site specific and entirely unique.

A high priority for the homeowner was an environmentally conscious house that would take advantage of the sun with passive heating and cooling strategies. With this in mind, the architects created a south-facing shed roof to maximize the area for solar panels.

What We Love: This inviting home provides its inhabitants with light-filled living spaces and an abundance of plants for a fun boho vibe. There are so many unique details in this home, from the wedge shape of the exterior facade to the round windows and the fabulous atrium. We are especially loving the built-in ladder leading up to a sleeping nook, the built-in dining nook that provides a sense of intimacy, and the stove in the living room. Its aesthetically pleasing and comfortable to live in!

Above: Ikea boxes were incorporated into the design of the kitchen to save money. For a look look, the fronts of the cabinets are fitted with a product called Reform. Ciruclar pulls are used for the hardware to echo the curves of the arches. For the backsplash, the subway tile was installed in a bond stack, which has a more contemporary aesthetic and is less expensive to install (brick stack has a more farmhouse feel).

In the center of the house, a double-volume atrium with vented skylights draws cool air through the house at night. The double-volume atrium also allows for an abundance of natural light to flood the interior of the house while minimizing the amount of glazing facing the street, which improved privacy. The handmade clay brick herringbone tile was sourced from Fireclay.
