San Francisco home gets a modern update that is warm and welcoming

This single-style home has undergone a modern update by Moroso Construction, located in Cole Valley, a small neighborhood in San Francisco, California. Constructed on a tight lot, this original two-story house over an undeveloped basement was raised about two feet to make room for a new garage, mud room, wine room, and family room.

The homeowners are a family of four, who purchased this home for its location and views. They wished to modify and expand their compact footprint — desiring to open rooms to the outdoors and maximize views from all levels, increase natural light, and give this dwelling a modern vibe that flows with the original style of the house.

The dwelling was raised to enhance access to the garage, while allowing for increased privacy from the sidewalk, and create a high-ceilinged family room that opens to landscaped terraces stepping down the site. A skylit stairwell drenches the center of the home with natural light while visually connecting all levels.

Some of the unique features in this home include a main entry hallway with two parlors that were original to the house, open to one another to be perceived as one space. On the upper level, the two secondary bedrooms host an original alternating tread ladder that leads to a mezzanine.

All three stories of the house were conceived to offer its owners a visual connection with the outdoor space. Upgrades include the addition of a third floor and complete facade restoration with new windows, trim and shingles.

What We Love: This incredible home features a modern update that respects this home’s original character while meeting the needs of a contemporary family. Luminous living spaces are elegant yet inviting, with stylish details at every turn. Despite its narrow footprint, the overall design feels open and spacious, beautifully connected to the outdoors.
