A former shipbuilder’s cabin has been completely transformed by Hoedemaker Pfeiffer, located on Maury Island, in Washington’s Puget Sound. The history of Maury Island is that it was originally connected during low tide to the more popular Vashon Island. In 1913, local homeowners constructed an isthmus to provide more convenient access between the two islands. Both islands are accessed via a ferry ride from mainland Washington.
This home was constructed in the 1890s, yet over the course of time had become a mishmash of decorative eras — including peeling linoleum floors, multiple roofs, chipped paint, and pink plywood walls. Over the span of a year, the project team spearheaded a gut renovation of the cabin to restore its historic character that had been stripped away. Encompassing 1,900 square feet of living space, the cabin was infused with warm woods, white details, and thoughtfully selected antiques to create a timeless aesthetic.

White cedar-paneled walls, Douglas fir flooring, and salvaged doors and fixtures characterize the design of this cabin. The project team went on a treasure hunt to source a mix of antiques that would further infuse historic charm into the interiors. Inside, you will find a beautiful mix of primitive nautical objects and beloved antiques, casual enough for sandy feet.
