Bohemian-inspired houseboat provides a calming oasis in Sausalito

San Francisco-based studio LOCZI Design partnered with DuGarry Construction to create this dreamy houseboat on the water, located in Sausalito, California. The homeowner is a successful professional and self-proclaimed “hippie”, who fell in love with this houseboat from the moment she saw it.

A combination of a tight-knit community and breathtaking views of Tiburon and Belvedere, this provided an idyllic oasis from bustling city life. The houseboat offered plenty of potential, however, it was in need of a major overhaul. A facelift to this houseboat was made ten years ago, which included replacing windows and getting the home watertight.

Fast forward to today, the homeowner (and her dog) were eager to bring some new ideas to life in this two-bedroom, two-bathroom houseboat. As a world traveler, she had an incredible and eclectic collection of furnishings and art. She also has an amazingly daring design sensibility, providing a playground for creativity for the design team.

Above: The large sectional was already existing, all it needed was some Sunbrella pillows for a playful pop of color. For the deck, which at first glance appears to be an area rug, is actually a custom piece of art. The design team commissioned Londubh Studio to paint directly onto the decking.

What We Love: There are some very unique and personal aesthetics added to this fascinating houseboat — all of which are tailored perfectly to the owner’s passion for all things Bohemian. From the tile in the bathroom to the backsplash in the kitchen to the tub planter on the deck this is one very special home. We are loving the use of color, design, and texture. This home fun and inspiring home are both joyful and relaxing.

Spanning three stories, over half the bottom of this houseboat is submerged. This helps to keep the lower area roughly 30 degrees cooler than the rest of the home. To help equalize the temperature, radiant heat flooring was installed throughout the hull.

Above: The project team created a more spacious master bedroom by reconfiguring the layout. This was achieved by relocating door openings and tearing down a wall from the office.
