Sculptural home boasts sustainable lakefront living in the Upper Midwest

SALA Architects are responsible for the design of this sculptural home set deeply into the hillside of this 4.3 acres property in the countryside of Stillwater, Minnesota. Encompassing 7,033 square feet with six bedrooms, five-and-a-half bathrooms, this architectural masterpiece features charred wood siding (shou sugi ban), cantilevered roof overhangs, and a glass bridge that visually delineates the public and private spaces of the dwelling.

The project team collaborated with the homeowners to create a strong, modern architectural statement filled with vibrant, light-filled spaces both large and small, accommodating the lifestyle needs of a young and growing family. Contrasting materials, textures, and patterns complement one another to create balanced and cheerful living spaces.

Energy-efficient design features and technology, including solar photovoltaic panels, a green roof, and geothermal energy systems, enable the homeowner to eventually become energy independent.
