Modern forest sanctuary nestled in a charming California mountain town

This modern forest sanctuary was designed for a family of six by Hawkins Architecture, located on a heavily wooded site in Martis Camp, TruckeeCalifornia. The couple was renting a home nearby when they came upon this three-acre site, perfect for building a family home that could meet their particular needs. They needed a spacious design to host the many activities that needed to happen on a daily basis.

With four children, three of which are autistic triplets, the family needed their home to act as a therapy center, with host professionals providing specialty services daily. They wanted the home to have a division of spaces so that the couple could have their private domain separate from the hustle and bustle of the children’s daily activities.

The homeowners had a vision of a modern dwelling with private zones that could accommodate learning, therapy, sleep, and play, while at the same time having common areas for family interaction. Their older son needed his own private retreat, complete with a loft and lounge space to play games and hang out with friends.

With 8,000 square feet of living space, the home was divided into four zones, an open concept living, kitchen and dining area, a separate wing for the children, a private master suite and a detached guesthouse. The architect designed several entrances to the home so therapists and adults could come and go without interrupting daily routines.

The couple called on interior designer Cheryl Chenault to help them plan functional interiors that would be streamlined from visual distractions and clutter to help their autistic children to live comfortably.

The open plan kitchen, dining and living area feature soaring ceilings, exposed structural steel beams and columns and materials of wood, concrete, hot-rolled steel and walls of glass that illuminates the home with natural light.

Opulence to the point of being somewhat oddball.
