This striking modernist dwelling was designed by Silva Studios along with interiors studio Dawson Design Group, located in the seaside town of La Jolla, San Diego, California. A vacation home designed for a couple residing in London, the homeowners challenged the architects to create a design that reflects a West Coast cool vibe with a healthy measure of London sophistication.
The original home on the site was a 1960s ranch house, nestled on Mount Soledad, a prominent landmark of San Diego. The soil had terrible bearing value, which had caused shifting and cracking of the existing home’s foundation. To remedy this problem, the architect designed a new stone and wood masterpiece using 32 caissons submerged into the bedrock. Inviting you into the home is a redwood and corten steel front door. The metalwork is by Studio Deline, while the woodwork is by Stine Poole.
The front door opens into the great room, with one wall featuring stacked stone and the other is a white wall with a dramatic floating staircase — both extends to the white oak ceiling. The pair of walls continue to the outdoor living space, extending out like wings towards the ocean. This effect is meant to draw your eye towards the watery blue horizon line. Coming up from the swimming pool, the walls appear like arms, welcoming and embracing you home.
The swimming pool also got a complete overhaul — giving it a better orientation, increasing the size and adding a spa. The original pool house was demolished to make way for a modernist, ipe-clad space with floor-to-ceiling glass.
What We Love: Built into the La Jolla hillside, this fabulous modernist dwelling offers a dream vacation home for a couple from London. An incredible indoor-outdoor connection helps to fill the interiors with natural light while offering views of the Pacific Ocean from every turn. The outdoor living spaces are equally exquisite, with a sumptuous swimming pool and spacious patio areas to enjoy the tranquil ocean views… Readers, would this home be your idea of the ultimate vacation pad? Above: Next to the kitchen, the dining room features a Riva 1920 table surrounded by chairs from Design Within Reach. The Serge Mouille light fixture over the table adds an industrial-chic touch to the interiors.

Above: In the great room, a copper fireplace creates a stunning focal point and contrasts with the concrete flooring and gray-toned kitchen.
Above: In the bedroom, the architects needed to have columns on either side of the bed for support, but wanted to have light be able to flow through instead of adding a wall.
Above: Meandering from the house to the swimming pool, the staircase is the only element that was preserved from the original home on the property. The stairs traverses down four levels, complimented by a California interpretation of an English garden.
