A gorgeous modern farmhouse was designed by Gast Architects for a retired couple and is located on acres of rolling hills near the coast, just outside of Arroyo Grande, in San Luis Obispo County, California. The new homeowners requested a contemporary-style farmhouse that resembles the vernacular architectural buildings of the surrounding vicinity.
The 3,277 square-foot home is spread out mainly over one level, with spaces designed to maximize indoor/outdoor living. A series of gable-roofed pavilions are joined together to define the outdoor spaces. They also help to capture the magnificent views out towards the surrounding hills.
The home was constructed with sustainability in mind. The architects integrated low-maintenance and fire-resistant materials into the structure. Photovoltaic panels were applied to the roof structure, while trellises, sunshades and plantings were used to help control heat gain and loss. A solar thermal system was also incorporated, providing heated water for not only the swimming pool, but most of the home’s water and interior space.
What We Love: The effect of the exterior facade is beautiful, the way it looks like a collection of buildings gives it a unique aesthetic. It is very clean and simple looking with plenty of natural light making the spaces feel open and airy. Overall, the look is crisp without being too sterile. A modern farmhouse design that has a classic country feel with a stunning contemporary twist.
