Tropical modernism in Laguna Beach with an Asian twist

The studio of GRAHAM Architecture was responsible for creating this custom designed beachfront home for a homeowner inspired by Balinesian design, located in the private beach community of Irvine Cove, in Laguna Beach, California. After a fire destroyed the clients original home in 2005, which was more of an regular contemporary ranch style home, this led to a complete transformation inspired by the client’s vast contemporary art collection. Working within the context of a sprawling 5,800 square feet (five bedrooms, six bathrooms on one level), the home is an eye-catching blend of casual California beach style, infused with the tranquility and elegance of Bali, all serving as a backdrop to showcaseย art. The infusion of Bali came from the homeowner’s frequent trips to the Aman Resorts in Indonesia, appreciating the warmth of tropical-modernism and wishing for this to be incorporated into the new design. The architects were restrictedย with the volume and roof pitch of the existing structure, so exterior changes were minimal. Working with the designers at Kit Design Studio, the interiors were given a complete overhaul. The interiors are comprised of a mix of timeless materials such as teak, mahogany, copper and honed limestone surfaces.

The original layout was preserved, with less walls to help create a harmonious flow from one space to the next, helping to merge the indoors with out. The result allows enough space for gallery walls to display the homeowner’s art, while pavilion-style rooms mimic that of a five-star Bali resort. The interior design scheme features a warm palette of hand rubbed plaster with detailed mahogany wood and sisal vaultedย ceilings. Theย home features windowsย designed toย capture magnificent views of the ocean, as well as pocket gardens, including one with a large spotlighted Buddha that was picked up from a trip to Bali. Outside, tropical landscaping with dark bottom pools and fountains completesย the design of this fabulous home.

What We Love: Tropical-modernism is beautifully displayed throughout the interiors of this home, casual but chic and very Zen feeling. We love how the art pops against the gallery walls and how every space seems to open to the outdoors, bringing in fresh ocean breezes and maximizing the ocean views. Luxury finishes can be seen throughout, yet there is still a feeling of casualness, a barefoot feeling that is very tranquil. What are your thoughts, could you find yourself residing in this beachfront home?

Kudos to Graham, and their lighting designer. Some of the prettiest lighting I’ve seen in modern design. Not elaborate, but so effective. Love the ceiling joists sharing cutaway drywall surrounds.
