Neumann Mendro Andrulaitis Architects designed this home for their clients to experience the quintessential California contemporary lifestyle, nestled in the foothills of Santa Barbara. Perched over the city, the property offers sweeping panoramic views over the Pacific Ocean, downtown Santa Barbara and the Los Padres mountains. The primary focus of this project was to capture a seamless indoor-outdoor connection and structure the architectural design to focus on the essence of California living. A spacious floor plan offers its inhabitants a total of 5,203 square feet of living space, with three bedrooms and four bathrooms. The shape of the structure takes its cue from the site, forming a simple, sweeping, inclined, radial arc, which helps to maximize the dwellings expansive views. According to the architects, “exposed cast-in-place structural concrete walls support a broad cantilevered zinc-clad roof structure. The walls are placed at the building interior, parallel with the mountain and ocean views, in order to minimize opaque structure.”

The perimeter of the structure features extensive glass walls that slides open to enhance the indoor/outdoor living connection and helps to optimize the dramatic vistas that surrounds the property. Sustainability was at the forefront of this project, an important design aspect that was requested by the homeowner’s. Energy efficiency was achieved through high performance glazing, extended overhangs to the south, solar thermal hydronic and PV arrays, as well as a green roof.
