The architects from Walker Workshop have created a minimalist 2,500 square foot guest house on Oak Pass Road with panoramic canyon views in Beverly Hills, California. The owner is entrepreneur Nathan Frankel, an amateur violinist who wanted the property to use as a concert venue for family and friends. The property is a quite place where he can listen to and enjoy playing music and where he could have others over to do the same. Designing with clean lined interiors, the focus is more on the expansive views and the spaces connection to nature; the trees and sweeping canyon vistas. The lower level is a re-purposed and enlarged barn with newly developed living spaces. The upper level is clad with wood, hosting two bedrooms at opposing corners of the floating volume. The standing oak trees on the property could not be removed by law, so they served as more of an inspiration for the design of both the guest house and the main house. The home feels more like a tree house, merging with its surrounding environment with expansive windows framing the tree canopy. The interior color scheme draws its inspiration from the intense grays and greens from the oak trees.

The spacious living room in this guest house can double as an 80-seat concert hall. The folding chairs and musical equipment can be tucked neatly away beneath the flooring. The architect also employed extra HVAC ducts around the edges of the space to keep the guests cool. The rectangular space proves to be perfect for sound quality, with the architects not needing to add any special acoustical enhancements.
