This contemporary steel and glass beach house by renowned architect Richard Meier is located in Fair Harbor, a hamlet located near the western end of Fire Island. The 2,000 square foot residence is nestled in a private bayside setting, designed to maximize its surroundings. The homeowners lost their original summer home to an electrical fire in 2011. The architect was a personal friend of the homeowners and after practicing for 50 years, he was coming back full circle. His very first design project was the island, back in 1961!
Due to new construction codes aimed at storm damage, the new home had to be designed as a raised platform. Digging 10 feet below sea level to support this loading bearing structure, the new facade has a strong indoor /outdoor connection. The main house extends over the property to connect to a verdant garden, swimming pool and accessory pool pavilions. The interiors of the home features double volume curtain walls on three sides. Deep roof overhangs shades the glass-walled home from the elements.
From the Architects: “A planar roof overhangs above two staggered volumes; one containing a double volume living room, the other accommodating a media room and kitchen on the ground level and the master suite on the second level. There is a shift between these two volumes, maximizing natural daylight and views of the bay.”
“In the center, the volumes interlock to provide a service core with powder bath and laundry room on the ground level and a sky-lit master bathroom on the upper level. A floating staircase connects the ground level to the second level corridor, which overlooks the living room below.”
What We Love: This bright and airy steel and glass beach house not only showcases spectacular views of the bay, but some amazing design features. Soaring ceilings, deep roof overhangs, skylights, wrap around deck and fabulous finishes, materials and furnishings. The home is a perfect amount of space to live comfortably and the setting is even more ideal. “The windows, curtain wall and skylights are composed of transparent, high-performance solar glazing with white aluminum mullions and transoms. The interplay of light and shadow across the terraces, double height spaces, curtain walls and skylights fills the residence with an airy, yet intimate atmosphere. The material palette of the project is minimal and understated, with an emphasis on lightness and transparency; glass, wood and white finishes reflect the natural colors and beauty of the surrounding bay.” —Architect Richard Meier
