This wilderness riverside dream home, called ‘River Dance’, was crafted by Timber Forge, together with Mindful Designs, perched on a bedrock cliff 100 feet above the serene Flathead River in Whitefish, Montana. The design of this home is an exceptionally thoughtful nod to past log cabins that made the Pacific Northwest famous.
It’s a 3,300-square-foot, four-bedroom and four-bathroom log cabin that requires no regular maintenance and offers top-tier environmental performance, fine-tuned for Montana winters. This home also boasts 1,800 square feet of deck and balcony space to enjoy the scenic turquoise waters of the Flathead River.

The classic cabin is artfully connected to a more modern addition that offers creature comforts and styling more reminiscent of mountain modern homes. All in all, you get old-world charm fused with modern comfort, excellent craftsmanship, and performance.

The vision for this cabin was to create a mountain getaway that is low impact on the surrounding pristine wilderness, particularly the Flathead. Several aspects of this timber home reflect green building and sustainability, something that the builders, Mindful Designs, specialize in.
Great Room With a View

Step inside this home, through the great room, and onto an expansive deck with clear railings to soak in the breathtaking views of the glacial river below, the dense forest, and the mountains beyond. This home offers the ultimate in seclusion. Crafted as a dream fishing cabin for the owners, the home is intentionally not accessible to the river below, which is filled with cutthroat trout.

Locally sourced materials, low-impact building practices, minimal tree removal, inviting bedrooms, and jaw-dropping views create a home in perfect harmony with its surrounding wilderness. The project team did an incredible job of creating a cabin that feels like it has always been on its site, thanks to the selection of popular bark shingles on the garage and the rustic chimney stack.

The most interesting aspect of this design is the juxtaposition of two structures, reflecting an architectural vision that embraces the past and builds upon it. The central structure of this cabin is finished with hand-hewn fir timbers and chinking, a rare material choice for new homes. The timbers are paired with newer, clean shiplap siding, evoking a sense of newness and growth. Nestled within a spacious lot, this cabin offers the ultimate luxury mountain escape.
