Nestled at the north end of Lake Joseph, Ontario, Canada, this gorgeous transitional retreat blends sleek contemporary architecture with timeless Muskoka character, crafted by Sophie Clapperton Designs along with Steenhof Engineering. Topajo Cottage (pronounced top-uh-joe) offers 5,800 square feet of living space that overlooks the lake. There is also an accompanying 1.5-story, 2.5-slip boathouse and three-car garage on the property.
Not only are there steps that meander down the hillside to the lake, but there is also a funicular gondola on a steep hillside track descending toward the lake and through pine trees. The gondola will bring you to the boathouse at the water’s edge, which has a living area, kitchenette, and a bedroom and bathroom for hosting overnight guests, right on the lake. Continue below to see more of this beyond spectacular house tour.

STRUCTURE Steenhof Engineering

Starting with a vacant lot, the project team transformed a blank canvas into a cliff-side residence that celebrates its dramatic natural setting while providing every comfort for family living and entertaining.

The exterior features sleek charcoal siding and a black metal roof, adding texture to the otherwise monochromatic façade. Expansive glass walls and clean architectural lines create a modern aesthetic, while exposed rafter tails and shed dormers honor Muskoka’s classic charm.

What We Love About This Home
This timeless cliff-side masterpiece seamlessly blends contemporary design with traditional elements, creating the perfect Muskoka getaway. With that all-black exterior emerging from the Canadian Shield granite, it is moody, confident, and completely at one with its dramatic natural setting. Once inside, the contrast is breathtaking: soaring white ceilings, a stone wall, floor-to-ceiling glass that makes the lake feel like part of the room. We love the idea of hopping into a funicular gondola to get down to the boathouse. What a fun way to reach the water’s edge!

Inside, bright white interiors and soaring 11-foot ceilings flood the cottage with natural light. The design draws inspiration from New York’s Art Deco style, with a crisp black-and-white palette, metallic accents, and striking linear patterns.

The Boathouse

This custom boathouse was designed to complement the accompanying cottage. The goal was to create a transitional design while adhering to the strict municipal bylaws of Seguin Township. The 1.5-story, 2.5-slip boathouse features a centralized hip roof with extending dormers.

Constructed on a limited underwater ledge, the boathouse required careful site analysis and an underwater sonar survey to locate a suitable shelf, allowing it to be built without cantilevering. A custom lowering swim platform responds to the dramatic shoreline, providing easy lake access for children and pets.

The exterior mirrors the main cottage, with charcoal siding, a black standing-seam metal roof, and clear pine soffits.

Above, the upper living level includes one bedroom, one bathroom, and a primary living space. Interiors echo the main cottage while introducing a playful, summertime palette.

This thoughtful design seamlessly blends with the main cottage while offering unique and functional features for the North Lake Joseph shore.
