Copper Sky Design + Remodel has transformed an existing bungalow into a cohesive blend of traditional Craftsman style with modern functionality in Poncey-Highland, an intown neighborhood on the east side of Atlanta, Georgia. The project team aimed to maintain and enhance the existing Craftsman architectural style, emphasizing its characteristic features.
Introducing modern amenities and technologies seamlessly into the design was essential to the homeowners and a key reason for the renovation. Great care was taken to ensure that these new spaces and features complement rather than detract from the original aesthetic. Continue below to see more of this beautiful renovation…

Improving spatial functionality and flow within the home was of utmost importance. The enhancements, including open-plan living areas, efficient storage solutions, and updated kitchen and bathroom facilities, are better-suited for contemporary living standards.

A new addition was incorporated into the design to provide additional space for the family’s specific needs, such as a larger kitchen and living area, an additional bedroom and bath, and an exercise room. The team aimed to enhance indoor-outdoor living with an accordion door connecting the family room to a new screened porch and adding a grilling patio.

The planning started at the front of the home, purposefully maintaining as much of the original front of house (including front façade and original windows) as possible, designing a fully custom cabinet package that allowed for built-in details, craftsman color palette, and modern storage solutions.

Custom leaded glass windows were designed and installed in the kitchen to mimic the original windows at the front of the home. Heart pine flooring and trim were sourced, and custom-mixed various stains to achieve a match to the original weathered stain.

The color palette and lines (geometric) of finishes were selected to stay within the realm of typical craftsman charm while appealing to an updated aesthetic.

The original layout for the rooms in the front of the home was maintained, while creating an “open concept” living area adjacent to the kitchen, and a spacious owner’s bedroom suite addition at the back of the house on the second floor.

What We Love: This Craftsman-style bungalow was completely transformed into a warm and inviting home that blends historic charm with modern-day comforts. Large windows flood the interiors with natural light, highlighting the original woodwork and striking architectural details. Thoughtful updates throughout create a harmonious flow between period design and contemporary living.
