Auhaus Architecture has designed this spectacular modern beach house located in Ocean Grove, a seaside town in Victoria, Australia. This newly constructed 4,700 square foot, four-bedroom dwelling boasts waterfront views stretching from Portsea through to Lorne. The design wraps around the site, enclosing an elevated, tiered central courtyard and pool area with views straight through the house to the ocean horizon beyond.
To the ocean side, the house presents as two stacked, elongated volumes, one sheathed in a fine skin of concrete, the other in hardwood timber that will weather to a pale silver. Spread out over three levels, the inner layout is interspersed with pocket courtyards and moments of double and triple-height space that amplify the feeling of light and air within the dwelling. Over the garage is a dune roof garden that over time will mature and meld with the surrounding landscape. Within the home, the roof garden frames the view of the Point Lonsdale lighthouse in the distance.
This home was created to replace an existing home on the site that was held by the same owners, yet was no longer habitable due to significant steel corrosion throughout the structure. The architects were tasked with designing a new home that would be able to withstand the elements of the site, which included ocean spray and windy salt-driven rain.
This multi-generational family included the owners, their two adult children, elderly grandparents, and future grandchildren. When creating this home, the architects focused on maximizing the site, building for the harsh elements and multi-generational living. The material selection is rustic and low-maintenance, including in situ concrete shells warmed up with Australian hardwood timber.
