This elegant Edwardian home was completely transformed by Gast Architects in collaboration with interiors firm Northbrook Design, located in San Francisco, California. The dwelling was conceived as a family vacation retreat with four levels to accommodate four generations. This location was selected because San Francisco is a world-class destination city.
The homeowners have a large family that lives all over the globe, so they wanted a gathering spot where loved ones would be sure to visit. The renovation project involved restoring the original shingle-style facade with a flared lower edge that covers window bays. On the lower level, brick cladding was integrated into the facade.

“The residence’s traditionally proportioned formal rooms flow naturally into more contemporary adjacent spaces that are unified through consistency of materials and trim details,” stated the architects.
The architects added a continuous staircase that runs from the first to fourth floors. The stair wraps around a steel and glass elevator that is centered below a skylight, illuminating each level with natural light.
