Built in 1964, this midcentury split-level home was renovated by Aspect Design Build, located on a nearly 2-acre lot in Shorewood, a city on Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota. Interior design studio Vintage Elements is responsible for infusing a California coastal bohemian flair into this full house remodel for a family of four.
The property had been on the market for several years, yet lacked an open floor plan and someone with a vision willing to purchase it. For the new owner’s, transplants from California, they liked the way this home connected to the outdoors and had the potential for great flow after tearing down barriers.

What most would perceive as design flaws, the architects decided to play up. This includes the pink brick exterior wall, which served as the inspiration for this home’s color palette. The spread out of the rooms also became a highlight to the overall design, as the architect know how they could honor this home’s past while making it more functional for modern family living.
Above: The kitchen features zellige tile, knotty white oak, and a black leathered granite island. For the built-in banquette, three small tulip tables can be left separated for homework, solo lunches and parties and pushed together for casual family dining. French doors on either side provides access to an outdoor entertaining area complete with a grill.
Inside is a series of distinct yet connected spaces, with each space serving varying functions while facilitating incredible entertainment opportunities. To create flow within the main level, shared spaces are connected via a light-filled hallway traveling along the back of the dwelling.
All the windows throughout this home were replaced, while doubling the amount of French and sliding doors to enhance the aesthetic of this home while blurring indoor-outdoor boundaries. Tile floors were torn out and replaced with wide-plank white oak, dramatically softening the interior.
What We Love: This midcentury split-level home offers a refreshed new look with a playful bohemian vibe throughout. Wood has been used throughout the interiors to infuse warmth, along with a layering of textures for visual interest. Large windows integrated into the design fills this home with natural light while also helping to invite the outdoors inside. Overall, we are loving the new aesthetic of this home with its mix of modern and vintage finds.

One end of this home encompasses the living/dining room and screened-in porch, while the other end is the everyday rooms — kitchen, family room and mudroom. Large windows installed along the corridor helped to transform the space while increasing natural light.

The master bedroom features floor-to-ceiling windows, inviting nature inside. White and pink accents in the art and textiles in this space and throughout this dwelling mimic the beauty glow of seashells, while also referencing the original pink brick wall outside.
