This alpine ski cabin was designed by Burgers Architecture in collaboration with Sophie Burke Design, located in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada. Nestled in a quiet wooded cul-de-sac just minutes from Whistler resort, this dwelling is a modern take on the ski resort’s historic relationship with the iconic North American cabin.
The design of this home is inspired by the mountain’s craggy black peaks and powder white landscape. At the entry facade of this home, it appears closed and foreboding. Once inside, the interiors open up to reveal expansive views of the pristine yet rugged surroundings, mimicking the thrill of skiing in the Canadian alpine.
Project Team: Architects: Burgers Architecture | Interior Design: Sophie Burke Design | Builder: Durfeld Constructors | Structural: C.A. Boom Engineering | Landscape Design: Considered Design | Millwork: Leon Lebeniste | Contractor: Durfeld
The scope of this project: “create a family ski cabin that is warm, modern, luminous and integrates locally-sourced materials, natural fabrics, and leading eco-friendly standards and building practices,” states the Sophie Burke. The result is a contemporary family dwelling that integrates innovative building practices that do not feel compromised or industrial.
The project team employed native white washed hemlock for all of the interior millwork, along with marble sourced from Vancouver Island. This mix of materials creates a soft Scandinavian aesthetic that is very West Coast while adding local context to this iconic Canadian location.
The designer was tasked with taking a contemporary structure with several hard surfaces and making it family friendly, cozy, serene and welcoming. Thoughtful planning was made on functional details, including solid baseboards and casing concealed to appear like seamless drywall returns — ideal for kids, ski boots and dogs. For design details, organic, natural elements were employed in the materials and finishes.
What We Love: This alpine ski cabin offers serene simplicity and warmth to create a welcoming home for family gathering. We are loving the Scandinavian influences throughout this home and the minimal design features to keep this home feeling clean and clutter-free. The use of wood on the floors and built-ins further adds inviting warmth to this beautiful dwelling in the idyllic setting of the Canadian Rockies.
