Tobin Dougherty Architects in collaboration with Sullivan Design Studio created this striking split-level home located in Portola Valley, California. Surrounded by oak trees, this 6,400 square foot home is oriented towards unobstructed views of the costal range and the Windy Hill. A deep overhanging flat roof design, along with a steeped fascia helps to preserve the classic modern lines of the structure.
The architects incorporated a Zero-Net Energy photovoltaic panel system into the design for energy-efficiency. This home also follows California Build It Green guidelines. There are numerous sustainable finish materials on both the exterior and interior, including recycled old growth cedar and pre-fabricated concrete panel siding.

Above: The material used for the siding and fascia is Cement Fiber panels – Rain Screen system, Swiss Pearl is the manufacturer. The Stucco color is a custom color with additional coating that gives the velvety finish.

Above: In the living room, the wall above the fireplace is custom patina finish steel paneling with a Walnut reveal. The stone is custom ledged-cut natural Colorado stone. On the ceiling is western cedar plank ceiling panels mixed with walnut beams — used for texture and acoustics. Finishes were selected throughout for their ability to translate to outdoor use, reinforcing this home’s indoor/outdoor connection.
To maximize views throughout this home, the architects devised an open layout. The entryway was thoughtfully designed between the first and second levels, allowing for a gradual and almost undetectable rise in elevation as you enter the house.
Above: In the kitchen, the lighter cabinets are Bleached Walnut and the darker stripe is Natural Walnut with clear finish. The Flooring is walnut with a low sheen finish and a light stain to enrich the color. Connecting the indoors to out is a 22′ glass door system by nano wall.
