This modern lake house was designed by Studio Temperate together with Mindful Designs, nestled on Lake Blaine, in beautiful Flathead Valley, Montana. The owners of this property are a couple with six children and seven grandchildren, who were looking for a family getaway home. They had vacationed in this region for years but wanted something more permanent.

The waterfront site is long and narrow therefore, the structure needed to be elongated to fit the property. For the new construction, it needed to withstand the harsh climate and be simple to maintain. There needed to be seven bedrooms, and each of them needed to have a deck with a view of the lake. There also needed to be a comfortable space for the grandchildren to sleep.

The home is nestled into the natural slope of the site, where a staircase helps to connect the home’s two levels with each other and with the lake. The windows throughout this lake house were all sourced from the German company UNILUX.

The exterior finish, the interior space, and the overall design use locally sourced wood products to create a real sense of place.

What We Love: This Flathead Valley lake house boasts impressive design details throughout. The expansive walls of glazing in the great room perfectly capture views of the serene lake, inviting nature inside. The heavy use of grain-matched walnut wood helps to infuse warmth, making this home feel comfortable and welcoming. We love how the project team selected clean-lined furnishings so as not to detract from the views. Overall, this retreat was beautifully designed to provide a family with a fabulous retreat to spend quality time together enjoying lake life.

Above: Stepping inside this home, you are greeted by a warm and welcoming foyer with a walnut-paneled soffit.

Above: The built-ins and cabinets are all black walnut. The sheets were specially ordered from a company in Oregon that could match the grain from one sheet to the next, allowing for 60’+ runs. All cabinet door and drawer faces demonstrate grain continuity. The cabinets were built and installed by Jerry Short Cabinets from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

To address the owner’s need for bedrooms that open to the outdoors, a lower-level bunkroom was designed, sleeping up to 12 overnight guests. There are also a pair of offices with plenty of glazing that can play double-duty as sleeping spaces courtesy of a Murphy bed.

Modernist furnishings were selected to compliment the clean lines of this home without distracted from the views of the water.
