This contemporary waterfront home on Mercer Island, Washington, was completely transformed by Studio AM Architects + Interiors. Sited just feet from the shoreline, this residence truly embraces the surrounding natural beauty by drawing it inside. A whole house renovation changes this once closed floor plan to a serene, open, and light-filled oasis.
The challenge was to reconcile seven levels, that go down from the street to the lake, into a cohesive flow of spaces while honoring its venerable 1970s roots. The updated interiors bring a new life and vibrance to the home and match the personality of its current inhabitants. Textures, rich natural materials, and color highlight the best of this home’s history. Curated artwork, custom lighting, and furniture complement the dramatic interiors.

DETAILS: The scope of this project focused on one of Mercer Island’s most distinguished residences, originally designed in the early 1970s by the renowned architect Reid A. Morgan Jr. It was beautifully restored by a couple who wished to embrace its magnificent surroundings.
What We Love: This waterfront home on Mercer Island was beautifully transformed to honor the history of this home while incorporating modern amenities. Interior walls and ceilings were removed to maximize views of the lake from every room in this home. So as not to detract from the views of the water, the mostly neutral color palette provides a soothing and serene living environment. The pops of color helps to connect the rooms to the garden, creating a wonderful indoor-outdoor connectivity.

The exterior facade was given a facelift, where blackened steel panels replaced deteriorated wood banding. The parapets were elevated to more effectively conceal the roof.

The cedar paneling inside of this home was reduced to create a brighter feel throughout. However, the architects preserved some of it to maintain the home’s original character.
