The talented Seattle-based multidisciplinary studio of Hoedemaker Pfeiffer recently completed this contemporary waterfront retreat on Bainbridge Island in Washington State. After spending years enjoying Bainbridge Island, the homeowners decided to explore the idea of renovating the existing home on the property, but eventually, through various trials, the project evolved into a new construction.
Hoedemaker Pfeiffer needed to preserve the homeowner’s long-term connection to the site as a place of gathering and connection with family and friends. The design team drew inspiration from the surrounding area, including family retreats and campsites. Continue below to see the rest of this home tour…

The result is 6,200 square feet of living space that encourages exploration, including three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a great room, an office, a media room, a sunroom, and a reading room with multiple porches and terraces throughout to engage the natural environment.
A special consideration for the homeowners was to be as energy-efficient and sustainable as possible. The design team installed solar panels to offset the house’s power and radiant heating in conjunction with a heat recovery ventilator to provide continuous fresh air and keep pollutants to a minimum. The highest efficiency heat pumps and water tanks further reduce energy consumption.
What We Love: This Bainbridge Island retreat features a beautiful monochromatic color scheme to create an overall feeling of tranquility. Window seats throughout this home help to capture idyllic views of the water along with Mount Rainier in the distance. They also provide cozy spaces to curl up with a good book, a great way to relax when getting away from city life. Overall, the project team did a wonderful job of creating an elegant yet comfortable home.
