The modern prairie house was crafted with attention to detail by James McNeal Architecture together with City Homes situated in Medina, Minnesota. This two-bed and two-and-a-half-bath architectural masterpiece seamlessly blends the sleek, clean lines of a modern home with subtle nods to the serenity of Asian-inspired design elements.
Central to the design philosophy of Modern Prairie is the harmonious fusion of form and function. The heart of the home takes center stage with a thoughtful layout that effortlessly connects the kitchen to the inviting great room and dining space which are accentuated by a two-sided, two-story fireplace.

With careful planning and consideration, Modern Prairie was designed to meet the CAPS (Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist) standards. This allows the homeowners to live comfortably and independently in their own homes as they age. The home features a main-level primary suite, a staircase ready for future elevator installation, and an unfinished lower level prepared for future expansion.
The project team included important features in this age-in-place home design, such as zero entry thresholds, wider hallways, a curbless shower, toe-kick lighting, and easily reachable appliances. This forward-thinking approach ensures both current comfort and future adaptability.
The main-level living in this home is designed with both function and entertainment in mind. It features an open-concept floor plan that includes a custom piano bar room, complete with a backlit Mont Blanc marble backsplash.
This room adjoins the great room, which features a surrounding view of the property using two-story triple pane windows by Kolbe Windows, a grand lotus leaf chandelier, and a striking two-sided fireplace with a stone surround.
The centerpiece of our kitchen is a remarkable five-by-ten-foot island topped with 3cm Meteorite quartz, featuring mitered and waterfall edges. For a cohesive look, we extended the quartz up the wall to form a full-height backsplash behind the 48-inch professional-grade Miele dual-fuel range, a dream for any cooking enthusiast.
Flanking each side of the kitchen is a serene, screened porch fitted with Phantom Screens and a butler’s pantry. The pantry comes with a versatile Miele steam oven and quartersawn white oak cabinets, offering a sleek and clean finish.
What We Love: This Modern Prairie house embodies a tranquil haven that blends modern design with the serenity of Asian influences. By incorporating thoughtful details and forward-thinking designs, the project team has created a versatile home that not only meets the needs of the present but also anticipates the future. The result is a space marrying beauty with functionality, creating a warm and welcoming living environment.
