Cairn Construction Group along with Zehren and Associates have collaborated on the renovation and addition of a duplex home located in Eagle-Vail, Colorado. The scope of this project entailed an exterior remodel, a full-scale interior remodel, and an addition to add space for a comfortable home office.
In addition to renovating and expanding the home, the project team crafted a bumped-out window box to provide a cozy window seat in the banquette dining area, created a new entryway experience, reconfigured the staircase, and created new ceiling volumes and finishes. The interior design concept was a “mid-century farmhouse.”

What We Love: This duplex home has undergone a beautiful makeover, completely transforming the interior into a warm and inviting family abode. The living room is light and airy thanks to the integration of large windows and a skylight, providing a comfortable space for family gathering. We especially love the new design of the kitchen with its built-in banquette, taller ceiling height, and beautiful green cabinetry.

In this kitchen, the green cabinetry added an attractive pop of color that mirrored the entry door. The addition of a gable ceiling in the living space, along with new finishes and furnishings, provided a common space that feels larger. In contrast, the addition of wood box beams and built-ins helped to maintain a cozy feel throughout.
The most significant decision made during the renovation process was to increase the kitchen ceiling height by 12 inches. Despite a kid’s bedroom situated directly above the kitchen, the project team determined that sacrificing some height in the kid’s bedroom was worth the benefit of creating a more airy feel in the kitchen. Additionally, they decided to reframe the floor and incorporate a window bump-out to maximize seating and create an improved traffic flow in the kitchen.
The kitchen was completely reimagined, taking it down to the studs. This space encompasses 270 square feet — 15 by 18 feet. The custom cabinet finishes include perimeter cabinets painted in a beautiful green hue with a plain-sawn white oak island base and other wood details. The countertops are soapstone.
