ART Architects have conceived this timeless modern farmhouse nestled in the rolling green hills of Woodstock, the shire town (county seat) of Windsor County, Vermont. The farmhouse design, with its gable-ended form, extends from east to west like a telescope, framing expansive northern vistas and inviting ample sunlight through large southern windows.
The entry portico extends from a wide, low porch, welcoming guests to this farmhouse nestled in a serene meadow with sweeping views of the Green Mountains. The garage, designed as a barn complete with a cupola, stands parallel to the main house. A winding driveway leads to the ‘dooryard,’ where the front door is protected facing south.

Above: The farmhouse is nestled on a 200-acre property, sited to take advantage of the idyllic views from every direction. The homeowners desired a house style that would fit into the context of the Vermont vernacular.
The Boston-based homeowners had originally purchased this land in 2001 and spend just about every weekend and summer here with their two daughters. The home that existed on the property was a 1970s-era structure, however it was never feasible to renovate.
Instead, they waited for the opportune time to build this new residence that would better meet their lifestyle needs while taking advantage of the views. They moved the existing house to another area on the property while their new home was being constructed. After the farmhouse was built, they sold their old home.
What We Love: The interior of this timeless Vermont farmhouse features open and airy living spaces for people to gather and plenty of space for guests to have their privacy. Elegant simplicity was the goal of the design and the architects did a wonderful job of achieving this. They created a simple country house that feels very comfortable and relaxed. A new old house that fits beautifully into its picturesque surroundings.
