Designed by RHO Architects, this contemporary ranch home nestles comfortably in the lee of the hills enjoying views of the spectacular valley in Eastern Washington. This rural retreat is nestled near the edge of the Yakima River Basin, offering views of the expansive North Cascades on the horizon. The home and outdoor patio were oriented toward a spectacular view of snow-dusted peaks and meandering pines across the valley.
For the design of their residence, the owners envisioned a contemporary take on the classic ranch home. Board form concrete, corrugated exterior wall paneling, re-sawn fir timber bolt frame, and steel windows and doors give integrity to the design while also acting as a bulwark against the sometimes harsh environment of the Cascade range.

Above: A colonnade of steel columns and cedar decking helps to create this rustic entry walkway.
Tucking a portion of the home and garage into the natural slope, selecting a darker color palette for the exterior, and constructing a separate bunk house for family and guests—these elements combined, serve to harmonize and ease the overall visual scale of the dwelling into the picturesque, rolling Eastern Washington landscape.
Above: Color, pattern, and texture are bountiful and varied throughout. This warm circulation vestibule pictured above connects the deep cyprus greens of the living room with the lighter, softer blues of the kitchen/dining areas seen beyond.
Above: The living room boasts rich textures, deep colors, and abundant natural light. The space also provides access to the upper floor using a winding wooden staircase that wraps around three sides of the fireplace/chimney structure. A well-placed ridge skylight illuminates this “hidden” stair hall with a gentle glow during the day and by night frames the ever-bright country stars above.

On the interior, spacious gathering areas are matched with the owner’s bold use of color and texture, creating a fun and welcoming atmosphere.
What We Love: This contemporary ranch home is surrounded by an expansive mountain prairie, tucked into a hillside. The hill provides shelter during the windy season while also adding to the scenic beauty of the landscape, creating a tranquil retreat for its inhabitants. With its modern design and natural setting, the home offers a perfect blend of comfort and serenity, making it an ideal haven for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Large overhangs offer shelter during the hot summer months and a buffer from snowy winters.
