Young & Young Architects together with Allard + Roberts Interior Design have designed this exquisite custom dream house nestled in the Grand Highlands community in Western North Carolina. Originally from California, a couple sought solace on the East Coast after enduring years within a constrained living space, sharing their home with a labrador puppy and a teenager, all while navigating remote work during the challenges posed by COVID.
They knew they needed more room to breathe, work and live, and had settled on this property with sweeping long-range mountain views. This dwelling has evolved into their long-awaited dream home, where they intend to reside full-time when they retire.

Tailored to harmonize with the owner’s distinctive aesthetic and functional requirements, the design team thoughtfully curated an array of finishes and intricate elements throughout the construction process. Demonstrating their extensive network of local and regional artisans and furniture makers, several furnishings were custom-designed to complement the space.
Above: The painting on the wall over the entry console table was sourced from Asheville-based art gallery Blue Spiral 1.
Above: In the living room, the chairs are from Bernhardt Furniture, while the coffee table is from Made Goods. Grounding this space, the area rug was sourced from Textura Rugs.
A plethora of items, sourced both locally and regionally, came together to shape the environment. From the beautifully crafted cabinetry and built-ins to the stone slabs and tiles, area rugs, lighting fixtures, and upholstery, every detail has been carefully considered.
Signature custom casegoods, such as the bespoke dining and coffee tables, further enrich the interior. Artwork, thoughtfully placed throughout, and curated accessories, including mid-century pottery, effortlessly interweave with the decor.
A seamless blend of vintage and contemporary elements, coupled with the owners’ cherished leather book collection, personal artwork, and accessories, culminates in spaces that are an embodiment of individuality and refined interiors.
Now the homeowners have room to work, live, and entertain. Notably, their furry baby, weighing over 90 pounds, revels in the newfound room to explore. No longer confined to constrained living spaces, this family enjoys the soothing spectacle of storms and sunny days, as well as the ever-changing seasons, through expansive walls of glass that beautifully merge indoors and outdoors.
What We Love: This North Carolina residence was created as a dream house, for a family to live, work and entertain with more room to roam.
