A historic home in Montana gets lovingly restored to its charming past

modern-home-exterior

MMW Architects have beautifully renovated this historic home that is located in Missoula, a city in western Montana. What the owners loved about their home when they bought it was the charm of the original 1920s structure. However, an addition from the 1970s lacked harmony and shifted the original charm to an aesthetic awkwardness and poor flow.

While maintaining the feel of the front facade, the rest of the dwelling was reconfigured and choreographed to offer beauty and meet functional needs. Like many homes in historic districts, the homes grow organically to meet the lifestyle needs of their inhabitants. Multiple forms and roof lines result.

Due to incorporating these same moves, this renovation fits seamlessly into the neighborhood. It is formal where it needs to be yet comfortable for daily life. The people, the dog, the cats, the wine: all were carefully tended to throughout the design of the home.

The spacious rooms and crisp white palette set the stage for vibrant tile and offer many locations for large-scale art. Easy connections to the exterior spaces offer all-season gathering under the shade of the trellis or while making s’mores around the fire pit.

What We Love: This historic home in Montana has been completely transformed to meet the lifestyle needs of its occupants. Undergoing a major overhaul, this dwelling still fits into the context of its neighborhood while showcasing a crisp, clean exterior aesthetic. The interior living spaces are just as beautiful while providing a harmonious layout and plenty of functionality. Overall, we are loving the light and airy feel of this updated home.

Looking at the house from the outside and then from the inside, I’d swear this was 100% new construction, not a renovation. But it is attractive in the way that most projects are attractive on this website.
