Intimate Living Interiors has reimagined this dated Mediterranean home into a coastal modern retreat, located in San Juan Capistrano, California. Inside you will find well-collected decor from travels abroad and an overall feel of casual elegance. The designer has created living spaces that promote a sense of well-being and offer plenty of entertaining opportunities.
This dwelling was completely updated for a young family who had relocated from the East Coast, desiring a most intimate feel for their newly acquired residence. They wanted the rooms in the home to function independently yet have a harmonious flow and reflect their lifestyle needs. Additionally, many of the architectural elements in the home felt heavy, especially the ceiling treatments and finishes.

Some of the updates in this home included the removal of drywalling between the beams, eliminating coffered ceilings, and adding whitewash to the original red brick. The project team also blended softer and more modern materials with traditional Mediterranean elements to create a sense of timelessness.

Above: The biggest challenge presented to the designer was the transformation of this 1,000-square-foot bedroom owner’s suite. It lacked both symmetry and balance. The team created spaces that provided a retreat-like experience. This room now boasts a beverage center for morning coffee or a nightcap in the evening. An intimate sitting area has a fireplace to enjoy cozy nights and a sitting area to watch television. There is also the sleeping area, which is the central focal point of the space.
