Gerber Berend Design + Build has reimagined this spectacular urban modern farmhouse home located in downtown Steamboat Springs, Colorado. This dwelling showcases direct views of the ski area and is sheltered by green space. The Iowa-based homeowners shared their nostalgia for early American farmhouses and wished for their new home to embody their lifestyle and elements from places they had resided.
Most of the original home was torn down and replaced with an L-shaped silhouette, providing the illusion of sequential add-ons over the years, typical of farmhouse architecture. White clapboard siding envelops the main house, along with the owner’s bedroom wing, and a two-story high shed to befit a streamlined facade.
Stone steps lead up to a covered entryway where floor-to-ceiling glazing offers a hint of what lies beyond. The dwelling transcends a warm aesthetic from the thick stone walls on the main level, the white oak hardwood flooring, and the soft hemlock ceilings, accented with a mood-inspired color palette.
What We Love: Inspired by its elevated setting, this urban modern farmhouse offers beautifully designed living spaces with cozy spots for relaxation and gathering with family. There are plenty of wonderful details in this home, but we are loving the rooftop deck with its awe-inspiring views. Overall, the architects did a fabulous job of completely revamping this home to provide the owners with an inviting atmosphere for entertaining guests.

Whitewashed walls wrapped in ebony trim serve as a modern backdrop for the owner’s whimsical artwork. A staircase flanked by an intricate slated wood wall and a custom rolled steel railing brings you up to the three ensuite bedrooms. Each bathroom depicts personality through custom vanities, playful wallpaper, and tile.
Discrete hallways flow from the entryway to provide an effortless transition between public and private living spaces. Large windows and doorways in the open layout living space unfold onto the back covered porch and the views beyond. The design provides a seamless interaction with the gardens including a hypnotic water feature, which bestows a sensory experience.
A custom steel climbing frame in the dining area doubles as a structural feature and hang-out spot for the family cats.
A stone and steel-clad hearth anchors the living space and beautifully complements the Mediterranean-style kitchen with its handcrafted mixed material cabinetry. Built-in window seats entice the family and their guests to spend plenty of time relaxing.
A windowed and clapboard-clad corridor leads to the owner’s bedroom suite, where an enclosed exterior space gives a nod to farm life with its corn crib design.
Additional guest space is cleverly hidden in the media den where two sets of built-in bunks are screened by rolling steel doors.
An outdoor spiral staircase leads to a urbanesque roof garden with views to downtown and Buffalo Pass.
