S3 Architecture in collaboration with Upstate Modernist has created this modernist woodland retreat that provides an idyllic cantilevered respite in Rhinebeck, New York. Rhinebeck is a charming, historic town nestled in New York’s scenic Hudson Valley.
Encompassing 800 square feet of living space, this modern refuge is perched on a forested cliff with restful views. Rustic materials combine with masculine and minimal interiors to focus your attention on the tranquility of this home’s surroundings.

When designing this home, the architect’s main goal was to begin the project with a preservation-focused plan that maintains natural spaces and sight lines.
This home is unique and site-specific, designed to respond to the natural characteristics of the land on which it sits, and built with sustainable and efficient building techniques.
Above: The exterior facade is clad in black stained cedar along with natural, clear, and vertical grain cedar accents. The deck that cantilevers out over the forest is composed of black locust lumber decking, the strongest and most rot-resistant wood indigenous to North America.
Step inside this incredible shelter to find a distinctly modernist aesthetic mixed with natural materials, warm textures, and traditional forms. The finished result is a home that offers its owners a re-imagined modern lifestyle.

Above: In this serene bedroom, some of the bedroom furnishings were custom-designed using hemlock.
Above: The bathroom was designed to feel like you are bathing in the forest. Sliding glass doors open to provide an indoor-outdoor shower experience. The custom vanity is composed of hemlock. The walls are clad in a porcelain grain tile, bringing the wood theme into this space.
