A coastal dream home inspired by the views in Kennebunk, Maine

beach-house-exterior

A family embarked on the journey of reimagining their house into a coastal dream home, commissioning Kennebunk River Architects for the task. This 3,484 square foot contemporary shingle-style dwelling is nestled on a coastal bluff with commanding ocean views on Lords Point in Kennebunk, Maine.

The architect’s most significant challenge was contending with Shore Land zoning constraints including the 30 percent expansion rule for area and volume. The resulting design conforms to all of the zoning constraints, is much less non-conforming than the structure it is replacing, and accommodates all of our owner’s programmatic requirements.

The homeowner’s goal was to create a home where they could entertain that was family-friendly, comfortable, and open to the views.

On the main floor, you will find a living and dining room that anchors either end of the home with the kitchen at the heart of the home. There is also a separate pantry area and a laundry/mudroom. The house is not huge yet has a feeling of spaciousness due to the harmonious flow and lack of hallways that take up space.

Living spaces were inspired by this coastal home’s natural surroundings. The designer employed a simple palette of blue, gray, beige, and white. She also avoided busy patterns that would detract from the views.
