An historic farmhouse in upstate New York gets a beautiful facelift

farmhouse-exterior

This historic farmhouse has undergone a modern update for a large family by Jess Cooney Interiors, located in New Lebanon, New York. The initial focus of the renovation and design started with the crux of the home, the kitchen. With its double vaulted workspace and large dining area, the designer wanted the kitchen to feel inviting and warm while keeping the space highly efficient and durable in order to lend itself to a busy growing family with lots of meal prep.

These elements extended into the other spaces, with a focus on honoring the historic components of the home, from the fieldstone fireplace; the stones of which were sourced throughout the property, to the comforting den where the owner did his homework as a child.

The screened-in porch is key for entertaining; with both a seating and dining area, the space is suitable for a variety of gatherings and mosquito-free evenings while you watch the cows graze on the pastures below. When the weather turns cold, the dining room offers spacious comfort next to the kitchenโ€™s wood-burning stove.

Wherever you navigate through this old farmhouse, the feeling of home follows you, which was the only requirement the owners brought to the designer at the beginning of the project.

What We Love: This warm and welcoming historic farmhouse has been in the owner’s family for three generations and has been beautifully refreshed. The redesign features cozy nooks, comfortable seating areas, and soft touches that make this dwelling feel completely lived-in despite its totally fresh look. Furnishings and accessories are durable enough to withstand heavy traffic while balancing function with aesthetics.

I agree with Kelly. It makes are person want to own or at least visit this very well done home which has a lot of character. It’s so different from an Arizona home where I live which is probably why it appeals to me. Beautiful!

I don’t know if I would agree that this is a “refresh” as you describe it. It looks like a total redo – a new build, but beautifully done. The only thing that looks like it escaped the remodeling are the low wood beams in the entry. It would be nice to see some before and after pics!
